Born in Portugal in 1185. Entered religious order of St. Augustine at age 15. Inspired by the Franciscan martyrs from Morocco, he was motivated to be like them. He was willing to give his life to the spread of the Gospel. He joined the Franciscans and traveled to Morocco. The African climate was not good for Anthony's health, so he decided to return to Portugal. However, due to a storm, the boat was knocked off course and he landed in Assisi in Italy, where he discovered that God had a different plan for him He met St. Francis and decided to join the Franciscans. He eventually came to Padua in Italy, where he lived a quiet, unassuming life….until he was asked to speak at an ordination. This was a milestone in his life because his gift for preaching was revealed and his life changed forever. Many people were touched by Anthony's peacemaking efforts. Popular devotion refers to him as the finder of lost objects. However, he was someone who found himself by losing himself totally to the providence of God. Anthony of Padua is the patron saint of our parish. We celebrate his feast on June 13th.
